The wiseman in India

How often we feel so misery when we learned that we have a life-threatening illness, or if we lose job, or we have some other unspeakable misfortune.  The following story may be able to direct you to a brighter side; turning a misfortune into an opportunity.

Once upon a time, there was a wise man living in a village of India with his son and a donkey.  They are farmers; they worked in the field using both human and animal powers.

One day, the donkey disappeared; suddenly, the man and his son lost valuable animal power to plow the field.  Their neighbors felt so sorry for them and came to condone them.  The wise-man smiled and said,

" Don't worry.  It is too early to feel sorry". The wise-man said.

Surely, after a week, the donkey came home with a wild horse.  The horse worth a lot of money.   The neighbors came over to congratulate the wise-man.  The wise-man smiled and said,

"It is too early to congratulate.  We will wait and see."

Two weeks later, the wise-man's son rode on the wild horse and fell from the horse and broke his neck and was seriously crippled.  The neighbors felt so sorry for their misfortune and came to condone them.

Still, the wise-man smiled and said,

"It is too early to feel sorry".

Three months later, the village was engaged a warfare with a neighboring village.  All the capable young men were enlisted and later died in the battle field except his son because his son was crippled from the falling from the wild horse.

The moral of the story is that a misfortune such as learning about a diagnosis of a life-threatening disease can be an opportunity for a person to have a better and brighter new life.  Here is my own story about turning a misfortune into an opportunity.

Back in 2009 when I came back from Taiwan sabbatical, I was diagnosed with Barrett esophagus, a pre-cancer of esophagus due to acid reflux.  After reading quite a few articles about acid reflux treatment, I was sold for a so-called effective once-for-all surgery procedure, called the Nissen procedure.  I did the procedure in 2012.  That procedure was my worst experience.  Not only the acid reflux symptom did not disappear, it actually got worse.  Any food with certain texture such as meat, I would have serious acid reflux problem.

Thus this misfortune forces me to eat plant-based food and stay away from animal proteins.  It turns out, the misfortune of the surgery became my opportunity for a healthy life style;  exactly what the Indian wise-man teaches about the life lessons.

Sun Rise, Sun Set, and Grounding--Part 3

Here are the practical applications of Dr. Pam's "cancer stem cell theory and SSG treatment".  In writing this part of the essay, I also included most up-to-date commonly believed cancer theory and prevention.

(1) Diet.  What we eat determines the course of cancer prevention and prognosis.  We especially have to pay attention to those details where both Chinese medicine and Western Researchers have agreed:  Avoid any food that causes insulin resistance.  This include all sugary foods including foods made of white floor ( bread, breakfast cereal, quick oat, bagel), drinks that contains corn-syrup ( fluid juice, or sweetened yogurt).  Best food to eat in this category are beans and greens, vegetables of all colors that include berries, red grapes, apples, onions, etc.  Avoid foods that cause inflammation.  Foods that cause inflammation are foods that are rich in omega-6, that include cheap vegetable oil, dairy products, grain fed animal meats.  Animal proteins are also known as 'cancer promoters' that we need to avoid as much as possible.

(2)  Living a life in sync with the nature.  The nature has day light and night darkness cycle.  A healthy human beings' wake and sleep cycle is in sync with nature's cycle.  Dr. Pan advises his patient s to go to bed as early as 9:30 PM and get up at 6:00AM.  Even it is very hard for a modern people to go to bed that early, try to go to bed at latest 10:30 PM, and get up at 6:00 AM.   Watch the sun rise and sun set will stimulate our eyes and mind.  According to Dr. Pan, it is healing for cancer patient.  For Western cancer researchers, watching sun rise and sun set do no harm to the patients; it actually relaxes the mind.  Our digestion also follows nature's cycle; sluggish in the morning and evening while active at noon.  Do not eat big meals or hard-to-digest protein meals in the morning or evening ; instead, eating the biggest meal at noon.

(3) Protect your brain.  Dr. Pan says that the protecting Yang-Pai death cavity (陽白穴) is the key for healing.  Actually, there are more ways of protecting our brains.  For example, we can avoid head injury as much as possible.  We can also do whatever means nurturing our mind.  This is consistent with the so-called 'mind-body' medicine that the Western Cancer Researchers begin to recognize its importance in cancer prevention and healing.

(4) EMF and grounding:  Dr. Pan is very passionate about eliminating EMF exposure and grounding practice.  Even some Western Researchers talk about it.  Yet, here in the U.S. ,  dentists and doctors love to use x-ray and other forms of radiation for diagnosis.  Thus, we need to take charge not allowing doctors to give us unnecessary radiation on our body.  Remove all electric devices including electric blanket from our bed room.  Minimizing watching TV or talking on the cellular phone.  Although it is hard to practice grounding using bare foot in our modern society, we can swim at least 3 times a week not only to exercise, but an excellent way for grounding.  Another good practice at home would be to remove all carpet in our home, as carpet insulates us from grounding.  Carpet also harbors dust, mites, and unwanted chemicals such as formaldehydes.  They are quite unhealthy for human beings.

Sun Rise, Sun Set, and Grounding--Part II

From Part 1.

According to Dr. Pan, the frequencies of those 10 death cavities (死穴) are altered in the presence of cancer stem cells.  Thus, if one sends an alternative frequency signal to one of the death cavities and observe a resonance phenomenon, the researcher can say that cancer stem cells reside on the cavity.

Dr. Pan claims that this method allows him providing early cancer detection before cancer stem cells are converted into cancer cells.

Diet connection

With this new 'Resonance' detection tool, Dr. Pan is able to determine which food is effective in preventing the formation of the cancer stem cells.  He found that three foods are highly effective in blocking the formation of the cancer stem cells.  They are: yam (sweat potato) leaves (地瓜葉), ginger, and lemongrass.  He learned about lemongrass from a patient in Laos.

Story of lemongrass

When Dr.Pan was in Lao, he saw a dying patient and said to himself that this patient had only a few days to live.  Three months later, this patient came back to see him; this time, this thought-to-be-dying patient was not only alive, but active and much better color on his face.  Surprised, Dr.Pan asked the patient what did he do.  The patient said that he ate lemongrass.  Dr. Pan took the sample and study lemongrass with his new instrument.  Sure enough, lemongrass was very effective in preventing cancer stem cells to form and to reside.

Insulin resistance

Both Dr. Pan and Western cancer researchers agree that insulin resistance depresses the activity of sirtuin, and hence promotes the formation of cancer stem cells.  Thus, we have to avoid eating anything causing the blood glucose to spike.  Avoid eating refined flour, breakfast cereal, pasta, bagel, bread, etc.

The toxins

Both Dr. Pan and the Western researchers agree that presence of toxins in the body can promote growth of the cancer stem cells.  Dr. Pan is very specific about the mercury as a toxin.  It was present in Taiwanese drinking water.  It also comes from the mercury filling.  Dr. Pan suggests to remove all mercury filling and replace them with ceramic filling.

The electromagnetic field connection

Dr. Pan had measured the magnetic fields for normal healthy people and dying people.  He says that the magnetic field for a normal, healthy individual should be around 20,000 gauss; while the dying people always have a magnetic field of 80,000 gauss.  Thus, he stresses the importance of grounding to remove excess electromagnetic field from the body.  Why does the electromagnetic(EMF) field in human body important? According to Dr. Pan, our neural signal transmission (that involve both neurotransmitter and ions) depends on suitable EMF.  When EMF is abnormally high, signal transmissions and ion transports will be interrupted resulting in calcification and other abnormal physiological functions. A typical symptom for a person with an abnormally high EMF is that the patient loses appetite and has severe insomnia.

The sun-rise, sun-set connection

Our eyes are magnificent organs.  They not only allow us to see, but the interactions of photons with the cells of the eyes allow us a wake-sleep cycle.  The photons emitted by the sun during the sun-rise and sun-set period has a wavelength around 680 nm.  These photons interacts with the 陽白穴 (Yang-Pai Death Cavity) and invigorate the surtuin (or the longitivity gene).  He claims that patients watch sun-rise and sun-set while grounding can heal their cancer disease naturally.

How true is Dr. Pan's theory?  I welcome your comments.  We also need to see more clinical evidences for supporting his theory.  A practical application for Dr. Pan's theory will be presented in Part III.

Sun Rise, Sun Set and Grounding--Dr. Pan's Cancer Healing Theory-Part 1

About a month ago, I briefly mention about Dr.Pan's (潘念章) cancer research in Taiwan. I was very intrigued, because if everything he said is true, then his method of cancer detection and healing methods would be extremely simple and eloquent. As a result, I made extensive research on him, on his theory by watching many of his presentation video. Here is my summary about him and his research.

Who is Dr. Pan (潘念章)?

Dr. Pan received his medical doctor degree from Taiwan National Defense Medical School (囯防醫學院) in 1981. He has been pathology specialist at Taiwan Veteran Hospital ( 榮民醫院)for 8 years and had been working on approximately 2000 dead bodies to study the causes of their deaths. He had been appointed in a special team of doctors to treat Mr. Chiang Jing-Kuo's (蔣經國, then President of R.O.C) diabetics. During this time, Dr. Pan learned about Chinese medicine from his mentor, Dr. Huang Ming-Teh (黃民德). After the death of Mr. Chiang, he was then appointed as a head doctor for type B hepatitis (the so-called Taiwan National Disease) prevention and treatment. He started working on breast cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. He is now a faculty of Bastyr University specialized in alternative medicine and treatment. He wrote a book, 'Principle of enjoying Longitivity' (享壽主義).

Summary of Dr. Pan's cancer stem cell theory and detection

Dr. Pan's theory can be summarized in the following chart which combine currently accepted Western Medicine theory and his own thinking and practice.
In the chart, the top part of the circle represents the normal cell, and normal stem cells (CD 45). The bottom part of the circle is the cancer cell, and cancer stem cells (CD 24, and CD 44). In the lower right, there is a mark called 'Sirtuin' that Dr. Pan called it the longitivtiy factor (長壽基因) is actually an enzyme that is involved in counteracting aging and inflammation. When sirtuin activity is low, the individual is susceptible to aging or cancer. CD 24, CD 44, together with sirtuin have been discovered by Michigan researcher in 2003.

The upper left of the circle shows the process of transforming a normal stem cell into cancer stem cells. The process involves toxin, inflammation, oxidation stress and apoptosis. The lower right of the circle shows the factors that facilitate the transformation from normal stem cells to cancer stem cells. These factors include: stress, insulin resistance, inflammation, and decrease in activity of sirtuin, the longitivtiy factor. These processes and factors are accepted by all cancer researchers including Dr. Pan.

What are the differences between Dr.Pan's research group and Western Cancer research groups?

While both groups recognize the importance of detecting and isolating cancer stem cells and sirtuin, Western researchers are far short of detecting CD 24 and CD 44, or cancer stem cells in vivo for several reasons. First, their presence is in minute quantity with concentrations in the range of pico or 10(E-15) gm/mL. Not many conventional instrument has such a sensitivity. Second, they do not reside in one place but flow through many locations.  Thus, it is very difficult to locate those cancer stem cells.

Here, Dr. Pan, with his Chinese 'blood circulation path' (經絡系統), has a tremendous advantage. According to Chinese medicine 'blood circulation path', disease attacks the body from surface and proceed to the core through the following path: Tai-Yang (太陽) via Bladder and Small Intestine Circulation Path(膀胱經與小腸經) 、Sau-Yang through Gallbladder and SanJiaug Circulation Path. 少陽(膽經與三焦經)、Yang-Ming via Stomach and Large Intestine Path, 陽明(胃經與大腸)、Tai-Ying via Spleen and Lung Circulation Path 太陰(脾經與肺經)、 Sau-Ying via Kidney and Heart Circulation Path 少陰(腎經與心經)與 and finally the Zieu-Ying via Liver and shing-Pau Circulation Path. 厥陰(肝經與心包經). The paths are transported via vibrational frequency resonance leading to the formation of the cancer stem cells and this path is shown as the inner left half circle from the top to the bottom.

Dr. Pan asserts that cancer stem cells reside on among 10 the so called 'death cavity' (死穴). They are: Yang-Pai ( 陽白), Chung-Hu(中府),Shung-Tsung(神藏),Jung-Mun(章門),Juai-Ku( 絕骨),Yung-Chuang(湧泉),Tim-Tau(地道),Kau-Fung(膏芳),Taung-Mung (衝門) , Su-Pai(四百). Part of the cavities are displayed in the following diagram. Yang-Ming (陽明) is at forehead while Yung-Chung (湧泉) is at the bottom of the feet.

Positive thought cures

According to Daniel Amen's book, "Change your brain, change your body", he says that the number of neuron-connections inside our brain exceeds the number of the stars in the galaxy.  The brain is a very powerful organ. It can be our best friend or our worst enemy, it all depends on how we think.

Science is making strides in brain studies, which are providing proof that positive thought really does affect our brain chemistry and thus our physical and mental health. So thinking positively is not only good for the body but also good for the mind as well

But here is the reverse of that. It is also true that negative emotions such as fear and stress can not only make us susceptible to disease but also can even cause diseases. Of course the same biochemical mechanisms that work against us may also be utilized to work for us. That could be why
being positive about life is usually always upbeat and basically healthy.

The new biology takes this even further. It is not just the power of suggestion but the actual thoughts and words chosen by the person, which changes brain chemistry. We have 50 trillion cells in our body, which communicate through neurochemical and vibration signals. Bruce H. Lipton, PHD, has done a large amount of work in this field, which is called epigenetics.

The word epigenetics means "above the genes." In other words, the mind controls the genes. Dr. Lipton says our minds can re-write our genes. He compares the cell to a computer chip, as each is a bit of information. Both can receive information through different routes and cause a reaction.

Even though the programming of the cells begins in infancy or before birth, they can be reprogrammed to act differently. The process, which the information goes through to affect the cell, determines the programming of the cell. Cells can become cancerous because they are instructed in some way to do so.

If we realize this and start thinking positively our beliefs will change our messages to our cells. Lipton says by doing this we can actually heal ourselves with positive thought.

We should realize if we subject ourselves to many negative thoughts, we will probably suffer from stress-induced illness. When the mind is stressed, the level of immune protective cells goes down. Now just the opposite is true when your emotions are relaxed, then the number of protective cells go up and thinking positively becomes a plus for us.

Since the 1960's Cognitive Behavior Therapy, a form of Psychotherapy, has developed based on the premise that especially positive thought can change behavior and overwrite the cell's memory.

Here are the suggestions for cultivating positive thought:

1) Regular meditation practice.  Because human beings are ingrained with 'fight or flight' mental attitude, most of our mind activities do not help for healing.  From time-to-time, we often experienced anger, and fear.  To quiet our hurtful "monkey mind", meditation is very useful.   According to Deepak Chopra, one should meditate at least 30 minutes in the morning after waking up from sleep, and 30 minutes before going to bed.

2) Express gratitude everyday.  If we are thankful for what we have, we will be slow to anger and fear.  No matter how sick we are now, just realizing that we are still breathing is sufficient enough for us to express gratitude simply because we are still alive.

3) Find a mission of our life.  The mission greater than ourselves will give us passion; enough for us to motivate us for thinking positively.

4) Offer help to other people.  Helping other people is actually helping ourselves because it brings us satisfaction and happiness in our lives.

In conclusion, our mind is a powerful ally for healing if we use our mind properly.  I offer my suggestions to those friends who need help for healing.

1964 vs. 2014. It is time to declare that animal food is bad for health

Today, (1/11), it marks 50 year anniversary of a very important 'Surgeon-General Report' that saves millions of life across the globe.

On January 11, 1964, Luther L. Terry, M.D., Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service, released the first report of the Surgeon General's Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health.  The report was controversial at the time because in 1964, half of the American smoked.  People smoked at the work, during the meeting, at the restaurant, even in the airplane.  Yet, today we acknowledge the contribution that Dr. Terry has made to the public health.  Millions of life (not just American) was saved because of the warning.

Americans have been fighting cancers for many decades.  Although we have made progresses in diagnosis, but we are not winning the war in cancer prevention .  The incidence of breast cancer in women and colon cancer in men is still rising.

Maybe it is the right time for the Surgeon-General to issue another warning about the health hazard associated with animal product consumption.

Many reports have implicated that  all cancers can be related to animal product consumption.  The most convincing report was the report published in 2004 by the lead author, Dr. Cambell,  the so-called 'China-Study', which was originally the 'China-Cornell-Oxford' project.

The China–Cornell–Oxford Project was a large observational study conducted throughout the 1980s in rural China, jointly funded by Cornell University, the University of Oxford, and the government of China. In 1991 The New York Times called it "the Grand Prix of epidemiology."

The first two major studies were led by T. Colin Campbell, professor of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell, who summarized the results in his book, The China Study (2004). Other lead researchers were Chen Junshi, Deputy Director of Institute of Nutrition and Food Hygiene at the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, Richard Peto of the University of Oxford, and Li Junyao of the China Cancer Institute.

The study examined the diets, lifestyle and disease characteristics of 6,500 people in 65 rural Chinese counties, comparing the prevalence of disease characteristics, excluding
causes of death such as accident.

China was selected for the study because in the 80's, due to the rapid economic development, some Chinese became affluent and ate like Westerners consuming more animal products.  However, there were still large populace that were poor, and consumed more plant-based food.  Thus, in the 80's, there was a large spectrum of the extent of  meat consumption in the subject studied by the Project.  The objective of the study is to relate the incidence of breast cancer to the extent of meat consumption.

The results of the study was stunning:  Researchers found that as the amount of animal foods increased in the diet, even in small relative increments, so did the emergence of the cancer that are common in the West.  Cancers occurred in direct proportion to the quantity of animal foods consumed.

So, what are we waiting for?  This could be a land-mark report to save millions of life:  not to consume animal products for the save of our lives.

Poverty is the shame of the society

Today ( 1/6/14), the windchill temperature in Appleton, Wisconsin has dipped to -50 F.  While most of us can stay warm in a house, I am worry about those people who had lost homes.  Appleton has 'Warming Shelter' to provide shelter for those homeless people to stay warm in frigid winter.

This brings up a story I recall from a friend.  Although it is hard to research its authenticity, I think  it is worthy to re-tell the story as it teaches us not to be indifferent to society's poverty and homelessness problems.

The year of the story was approximately in 1935 when depression hit America and affected lives of many Americans especially the poor.

One day, a court was hearing a case that an old lady in the 70's was accused of 'stealing a loaf of bread' at a bakery shop.

' Did you steal a loaf of bread from a bakery owned by Mr. Charles?'  Asked  the judge.

'Yes, Your Honor.  I have 3 grand-kids  to take care of as their dad is really sick.  All of us are very hungry."   Answered the old lady.

" Very well.  According to the law, you can pick and choose the following punishment:  Either you pay the fine for $15 or you can stay behind bar for 10 days". Said the judge.

" Your Honor,  if I had $15, I would not steal a loaf of bread.  If I stay behind the bar, who is going to take care of my sick son and three grand-kids?"  Answered the old lady.

There was some noise in the audience as they were talking to each other in small voices.

Suddenly, a gentleman stood up.

"Your Honor,  I will pay the $15 fine for her."  The gentleman said.

Then he faced the audience and continued to say.

" My name is Richard Peterson, the mayor of this town.  I will be collecting $50 from each of you including myself as our 'debt' to this old lady and the poor people like her in this town because in this great society of Boston, we allow our indifference, and apathy  to permeate through and not showing any compassion so that this old lady had to 'steal' a loaf of bread to feed her grand-kids and her sick son."

As the story goes, Mr. Peterson passed his hat collecting $50 debt from everyone in the court including the judge.

The moral:  Poverty is the shame of the society.  We all have the responsibility to eradicate poverty in our society.
